A party that has continuously connected people through new musical encounters by transcending the boundaries of genres and formats—New Action! Started in 2009, this event is held regularly every month at Shinjuku MARZ in Tokyo, featuring over 300 artists and boasting more than 120 editions to date.
This year marks the third time that New Action! will move its stage to Enoshima Oppa-La for a special summer edition. While previous events were held overnight, this will be the first to take place during the daytime. After past collaborations with Kunmohile (1st edition) and Simmer Pine (2nd edition), this year’s spotlight falls on the five-piece band Cosmic Mauve—perfectly matched for the midsummer sun. Two summer-loving forces unite for a special night that marks the beginning of a new season.
We interviewed each of the artists performing at this event—Cosmic Mauve, Sally Cinnamon, Enputei, Odoru! Disco Muromachi, and Shota Katayama—to hear their thoughts on New Action!, their musical roots, and what this summer means to them.
1. Please introduce yourself
Cosmic Mauve: A five-piece “summer boys” band from Tokyo. Though they grew up in Machida—far from the sea—their longing for the ocean, combined with vocalist Kota’s rich overseas experiences, fuels their music, painting fantastical tropical scenes through their band sound.
Sally Cinnamon (Vo/Gt Ryo Kamakari): A four-piece band based in Osaka.
Enputei: Formed in Nagoya in 2020 by Koichiro Okunaka (Vo/Gt), Kunikazu Hishijima (Gt), and Kazuki Ishijima (Key). Joined by Yukihiro Kamiya (Dr) and Shun Akatsuka (Ba) in 2023.
Odoru! Disco Muromachi: A 10-piece funk band from Kyoto.
Shota Katayama: Performing as a DJ. Active mainly at Shimokitazawa BASEMENTBAR, and also involved in MACHIFES. and exPoP!!!!!.
2. Which artists or cultures have influenced you? How do those influences show up in your work?
Cosmic Mauve: Tatsuro Yamashita. We’re heavily influenced by his three-dimensional and breezy sound, and songs that evoke vivid imagery. He’s our inspiration.
Sally Cinnamon: Noel Gallagher from Oasis and the ’90s UK Britpop culture. We were saved by that dazzling sound and forceful brightness, and now we infuse those elements into our music.
Enputei: We can’t choose just one. We express emotions that are hard to put into words through music.
Odoru! Disco Muromachi: We were inspired by James Brown’s performance in the movie “Soul Power.”
Shota Katayama: As a DJ, I was greatly influenced by Kiichiro Hoshihara. Mimicking his mixes helped me grow.
3. What kind of “new discoveries” do you want the audience to take home?
Cosmic Mauve: “New Action!” is a place of discovery for bands too. We hope the audience takes home a one-night-only, unforgettable memory full of charm and excitement.
Sally Cinnamon: We want to bring you a new take on kayōkyoku by blending rave culture with a revival of Japanese pop melodies.
Enputei: Even music you thought you knew can show a new face. We hope you experience such moments.
Odoru! Disco Muromachi: Honestly, nothing beats the live experience.
Shota Katayama: Even those unfamiliar with DJ sets or who come for the bands—I want them to discover the joy of dancing to a DJ set.
4. What’s been your personal “New Action” lately?
Cosmic Mauve: We no longer have a long-haired member in the band (laughs). But honestly, it was a pretty serious change for us.
Sally Cinnamon: Lately, I’ve been trying to interpret everything in life through the lens of baseball.
Enputei: Exploring live arrangements we’ve never tried before.
Odoru! Disco Muromachi: I’ve been making spice curry. Trying to replicate the flavor of my favorite shop—but haven’t nailed it yet.
Shota Katayama: I’m focusing on spending time only on things I truly enjoy.
5. How do you want to enjoy this summer starting from Oppa-La?
Cosmic Mauve: Enoshima is a special place for us. We want to share a moment that feels like the true beginning of summer with everyone there.
Sally Cinnamon: I want this to be a wonderful summer—soaking in the sun and listening to the sound of the waves. I also hope to create a Sally-style summer song.
Enputei: We want to go into the ocean together as a band.
Odoru! Disco Muromachi: I want to try Oppa-La’s curry. Then recreate it back in Kyoto.
Shota Katayama: I want to stay somewhere cool and sip beer outdoors from time to time.
6. What impression do you have of “New Action!”?
Cosmic Mauve: It feels like recess at school—a space full of freedom. There’s a sense that both the staff and audience are building the event together.
Sally Cinnamon: It feels like a place where we might discover new sensations different from what we usually experience in Kansai.
Enputei: I thought it was an event overflowing with joy and happiness.
Odoru! Disco Muromachi: I imagine it as a place full of energetic people.
Shota Katayama: I’ve been going since 15 years ago. It’s amazing how they’ve kept mixing DJs and bands for so long.
7. Lastly, a message to those attending and to readers of New Action!
Cosmic Mauve: Even for those who can’t make it, we’ll make it a day that transmits the energy. As always—we’re “everyone’s summer.”
Sally Cinnamon: The best location and the best music—this event has it all. Let’s have fun together!
